Spain: Liberty Global rivals Vodafone for merger spree

Just days after Liberty Global announced a $13.7 billion deal to acquire Netherlands-based cable conglomerate Ziggo, reports say the US cable company is on to the next merger deal with a bid for Spain’s Ono, and will be competing for the acquisition with UK telco Vodafone.

    The two have separately launched bids for the Spanish company, and reports say the merger could be worth about $9.57 billion.

    The bidding also comes following reports Vodafone shareholders cleared a $130 billion sale of Verizon Wireless back to its parent company Verizon Communications.

    Despite reports, a source says the bids are preliminary and the offers may not lead to an official deal.
