Spain: Telefonica hikes pay-TV assets

Spain’s top telco Telefonica has reportedly boosted its pay-TV assets with an 11.1 percent stake acquisition in Mediaset Premium.

Reports say a $136 million deal was reached between the companies and could signal future deals struck by Mediaset. The company has reportedly revealed that future transactions are in the works with the UAE’s Al-Jazeera and France’s Canal Plus.

Telefonica’s acquisition follows just adays after it acquired 22 percent in Digital Plus, a stake bought by Mediaset. The deal was made for $400 million.

Telefonica is Europe’s second-largest telco; its recent deals, reports say, signal the conglomerate’s newfound interest in pay-TV.

Mediaset, meanwhile, announced Monday that it is planning to completely spin-off its pay-TV operations. The assets are Italy’s second-place pay-TV player.
