Switzerland: Broadcasters cheer regulator’s decision on sports programming

Following an investigation by Switzerland’s Competition Commission last April, the regulator announced it has rejected measures proposed by three cable providers against two pay-TV broadcasters regarding programming of live sporting events. According to reports, Swisscom and Cinetrade were probed regarding the programming but regulators will allow the companies to maintain their live sporting broadcasting format without changes. Cable companies accused the broadcasters of illegally “expanding the range of live sports broadcasts” in the nation, According to Swisscom, which released a statement welcoming the Commission’s decision. Further, Swisscom claimed the complaints were more an issue of the cable companies’ failure to promote their own sports programming.
