The European Commission, which enforces the EU’s competition laws, carried out raids on several companies across multiple EU countries in June 2023 as part of a wider inquiry into potential cartel activity in the synthetic turf sector. Although the companies targeted were not disclosed, the Commission said it issued two requests for information to Eurofield and Unanime but suspected the replies were incomplete. The probe was formally opened in November of last year, per Reuters.

EU authorities determined that the companies committed at least a negligent procedural breach of antitrust rules by withholding information. “Today’s decision marks the first time we fine a company for such a procedural breach in the context of an antitrust procedure,” EU antitrust chief Teresa Ribera said in a statement.

Unanime Sport, which controls Eurofield, is majority-owned by Dutch firm TenCate Grass Holding BV, according to Reuters. The Commission emphasized that while the fine was procedural, it underscored the importance of cooperation in cartel investigations.
