Tanzania: Tender to find oil importer raises red flags

Irregularities stemming from a government tender to establish the company that will import fuel for the National Strategic Petroleum Reserve have caught the eye of the Tanzania Fair Competition Commission, which now says it is looking into whether to launch a probe into the matter.

Reports say the tender, initiated y the Tanzania Petroleum development Corporation, faces cancellation following evidence the top two companies in the running established a joint agreement in violation of public procurement rules. The two companies are Vitol, based in Switzerland, and Oman Trading International.

In a statement, the FCC said it “is interested to investigate” the situation.

More than two-dozen companies competed for the contract.
