Trump Signals Progress in US-China Trade Talks, Suggests Deal on TikTok

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that trade negotiations with China had shown strong progress, suggesting that a breakthrough had been reached regarding the future of TikTok’s ownership. According to Reuters, Trump expressed optimism about the talks, describing them as having gone “very well.”

    The president also revealed that he is scheduled to hold a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. Per Reuters, Trump hinted at the conclusion of a broader trade agreement during recent meetings in Europe. “The big Trade Meeting in Europe between The United States of America, and China, has gone VERY WELL! It will be concluding shortly,” Trump wrote.

    Alongside the trade discussions, Trump signaled that the two sides had reached a resolution over a company popular with younger Americans, an apparent reference to TikTok. In his statement, Trump said, “A deal was also reached on a ‘certain’ company that young people in our Country very much wanted to save. They will be very happy! I will be speaking to President Xi on Friday. The relationship remains a very strong one!!!”

    According to Reuters, the U.S. government has long raised concerns over the security and ownership structure of TikTok, which is operated by China’s ByteDance.
