U.K.: Commission begins probe of Makro/Booker merger referred from OFT

The Competition Commission has begun its investigation into the proposed acquisition of Makro by Booker, an issue that was referred to the Commission after the Office of Fair Trading found the deal to hamper competition. The Commission has until April to conclude its probe, but in a statement said that an initial view showed “significant overlaps in the parties’ supply” and that some potential issues reach both the local and national levels.
