UEFA and European Commission issue joint statement on state aid and football clubs

 |  March 22, 2012

Joaquín Almunia, Vice President of the European Commission for competition policy, and Michel Platini, UEFA President, issued a joint statement on the interaction of professional football of Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and state aid. Almunia remarked upon concerns that European football clubs were becoming increasingly indebted, and that public support–especially for inflated wages for players–would distort competition. Under EU state aid rules, public support must be notified to the European Commission; however, only a few measures have been notified. The joint statement announces cooperation between the Commission and UEFA for such competition issues, as well as fiscal treatment of clubs.
