UK: Business leaders want Commission crackdown on mega unions

Big players in the UK’s business world are calling for more jurisdiction to be handed to the Competition Commission in order to combat mega-unions they say are becoming too powerful. The UK’s largest union is Unite with 1.5 million members; it emerged as a result of a merger between the Transport & General Workers Union and Amicus. Those calling for the Competition Commission to be able to probe unions and potentially block union mergers compiled a report under the Institute of Directors; the IoD has offered proposals for how the Commission may prevent the threat of unions having so much power they distance themselves from “their original purpose,” according to the group.
