UK: China clay activity raises suspicions for Competition Commission

The UK’s Competition Commission announced last week that a merger between kaolin suppliers threatens competition and could increase prices for consumers. The Commission announced its ruling on the merger between the kaolin – also known as china clay – Imerys Minerals Limited and Goonvean Limited reduces the number of competitors in the industry to just one with special concern in the market of tableware and performance-mineral applications of kaolin. The watchdog offered potential remedies for the parties.
