UK: Country’s second and third biggest betting shops considering merger

UK high street bookmakers Ladbrokes and Coral are in talks over a potential merger that would leave them with a combined estate of over 400 shops, according to a report in the Racing Post.

The two betting giants are said to have possibly sounded out competition authorities as they look to compete with market leader William Hill and emerging online competitors.

Ladbrokes saw an attempted takeover of Coral blocked by the government in 1998 over competition concerns.
