UK: Hospital merger scrutiny earns negative feedback

Criticism is hitting policymakers in the UK as negative feedback blames regulatory scrutiny of hospital mergers for blocking necessary hospital services and reconfiguration projects.

Health minister Daniel Poulter said the feedback is not going unheard but assures that current policy does not promote “competition for competition’s sake,” instead is in place to promote consumer choice.

Recent criticism has hit regulators reviewing the proposed merger between Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals and Poole Hospital foundation trusts, which critics say is crucial to strengthening the availability of health services.
