UK: OFT not set on mineral merger after probe

A merger between two mineral companies has been referred to the Competition Commission by the Office of Fair Trading after the OFT’s probe of the deal raised concerns. Imerys Miners acquired Goovean in a transaction the OFT found to post threats to competition, creating a near-monopoly in the business of kaolin, a mineral used to make various products like sinks, baths, toilets, and paper products.
