UK: OFT unable to approve of hospital merger, refers deal to Commission

The Office of Fair Trading has announced it referred a proposed merger between the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals and Poole Hospital NHS Foundation Trusts to the Competition Commission, stating that the OFT could not ensure that the benefits of the merger would outweigh the risks. Specifically, the review of the proposed merger found that the two entities were direct competitors in “a number of specialties,” according to OFT Chief Executive and Decision Maker Clive Maxwell.
