UK: Pie merger leads CMA to probe market structure

 |  December 18, 2014

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has opened a phase II investigation into the pork pie, pastry and sausage roll market following the merger of the industry’s two largest suppliers.

The CMA announced Wednesday that it will launch a probe into Pork Farms’ acquisition of Kerry Foods assets. Reports say both supply supermarkets with their products, and that their merger creates a “realistic prospect” of “a substantial lessening of competition” in the supply of such pies and pastries, the CMA found.

The watchdog added that the investigation would move forward unless Pork Farms offered concessions to quell competition fears within the next five days.
