UK: Telco market reps back Ofcom switching overhaul

 |  October 7, 2014

A group of representatives of the UK’s telecommunications industry has sent a letter to Ofcom CEO Ed Richards in support of the regulator’s plans to boost consumers’ ability to switch wireless providers.

According to reports, Three UK, TalkTalk, the Federation of Communications Service and LetsSaveMoney.com sent a joint letter to Ofcom welcoming its agenda to reform telco switching rules. According to the writers, “the UK mobile switching process is almost unique in Europe in requiring consumer to deal with two providers. This makes it harder for consumers to secure better deals, undermines competition and leads to considerable consumer harm.”

According to the companies, nearly 1.2 million of the 9 million users who attempt to switch their telco providers are either penalized or lose service.

The letter hopes to encourage Ofcom to establish a Gaining Provider Led system across the communications sector to streamline the switching process.

The full letter can be read below.
