UK: Vodafone wants a BT breakup

Vodafone has joined the call for rival BT to be broken.

Vittorio Colao the chief executive of Vodafone insists BT should be broken up and that Openreach, BT’s network division which provides ‘final mile’ broadband and other services to millions of households should be hived off.

He added, that Vodafone would consider becoming an investor in an independent Openreach should regulators listen to calls from several of BT rivals to split up the company.

Vodafone has expanded its UK business for the first time in more than three years with its UK 4G network covering two thirds of the population as part of its Project Spring initiative.

In a submission to Ofcom, Vodafone will argue that BT generated £6.5bn in “excessive profits” in the past 10 years from its Openreach division, which controls the national network.
