US: Is antitrust law to blame for controversial hospital bill discrepancies?

A recently released government report on the wide range of prices hospitals throughout the US charge for the same procedures has earned much public backlash, but defenders of those hospitals note businesses run the risk of violating antitrust law if pricing information is exchanged. In a statement responding to the recent findings, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association Rich Umbdenstock noted that while the healthcare system in the nation needs an overhaul, those price discrepancies are a “byproduct of the marketplace.” While transparency in hospital pricing is widely encouraged – or even legally enforced – throughout the nation, a bill has been proposed that would require the public disclosure of charges.
