US: Dish satellite transfers spark merger rumors

A recent deal made by Dish Network to transfer five of its satellites to EchoStar has sparked rumors the company could be readying for a broadcast with DirecTV, say reports.<>According to one Citigroup analyst, Jason Bazinet, such a merger could emerge following the recent announcement of Comcast’s plans to acquire Time Warner Cable.

    Reports say a Dish/DirecTV merger has been discussed for several years.

    Dish first announced last Friday that it reached an agreement with EchoStar for the satellite transfers, which will see Dish paying EchoStar $11 million.

    Dish will subsequently lease out those satellites.
