US: FCC’s Wheeler addresses broadband industry

 |  April 30, 2014

In a recent blog post published Tuesday, Federal Communications Commission head Tom Wheeler spoke out to assure the nation that he remains committed to an open Internet, and, in what reports say is the first time, Wheeler remarked on th state of competition in the nation’s broadband market.

”There remains a shortfall in adequate broadband competition,” he wrote.

The post precluded Wednesday’s speech at the National Cable and Telecommunications Association to defend net neutrality.

The FCC has been under fire in recent weeks after its planned proposals for an open Internet were leaked and seemed to show the regulator backing away from banning the practice of content providers being allowed to pay service providers for priority content delivery.

The FCC is set to official offer the draft Internet rules for public comment in two weeks.
