US: FTC’s McSweeny to step down

US Federal Trade Commission member Terrell McSweeny will resign next week after four years on the panel, the FTC said in a statement on Monday.

    McSweeny was appointed to the FTC by Democratic former President Barack Obama and her last day will be April 27, the statement said.

    McSweeny had previously indicated that she would stay at the agency until other commissioners arrived.

    “There is a long-standing practice at the FTC of commissioners remaining in their positions until a replacement arrives, and Commissioner McSweeny plans to do that, especially in light of the fact that there are already three vacancies at the commission,” an FTC spokeswoman said in December to Law360.

    In January, Trump nominated four commissioners to take spots at the agency, but they have not yet been confirmed by the Senate.

    McSweeney’s departure comes as the FTC investigates Facebook over its privacy and data collection practices, following a scandal in which Cambridge Analytica, the British research firm used by the Trump campaign during the 2016 election improperly harvested data from 87 million Facebook users.
