Memorial Hermann Health System and Baylor Scott & White Health, Texas’ largest not-for-profit system—have signed a letter of intent to merge, the institutions announced Monday, October 1.
The merger would create a mega-system stretching from Dallas to Austin to Houston, treating patients in more than 30 Texas counties and employing more than 73,000 people across the state, reported the Wall Street Journal.
The combination would be among the largest US systems by number of hospitals, with annual revenue of more than US$14 billion, reported the Journal.
“The means is to create economies” of scale, said Baylor Scott & White Chief Executive Jim Hinton. “The end, the more important end, is to improve care and invest in digital and ambulatory and other modes of care.”
Mr. Hinton would be named CEO following the merger, which could close as soon as July 2019.
