US: HP, EMC end short-lived merger hopes

Immediately after Hewlett-Packard announced earlier this month that it would split itself into two separate companies, rumors emerged that one of those companies would merge with EMC.

But according to reports, unnamed sources say those merger talks have ended, and HP could announce the development as soon as Wednesday.

Elliot Management, an activist investor, had previously encouraged EMC to pursue either a spinoff or a merger with HP.

As recently as last week HP and EMC has confirmed they were looking to strike a deal. Both companies declined to comment on the reports.
