US: More than half of class action settlement money related to antitrust cases

According to a recently-released study, more than half of funds from settlements reached in class action lawsuits between 2010 and 2013 were related to antitrust cases.

NERA Economic Consulting released a study entitled Consumer Class Action Settlements: 2010-2013: Settlements Increasing, With A Focus on Privacy to examine trends in recent class action litigation. While the study examined cases stemming from a wide array of allegations, from consumer fraud to false advertising, NERA found that 56 percent of the money accumulated from class action settlements reached between 2010 and 2013 were from antitrust lawsuits.

Among the other trends observed include: nearly three-fourths of consumer class actions observed were settled in just five states, the majority of which were in California; 12 percent of all settlement funds observed in the study dealt with the motor vehicle industry; and the banking and finance industry had the most cases settled during the time observed.
