US: Obama’s pick for FCC head to focus on competition

Tom Wheeler, nominated by President Barack Obama to head the Federal Communications Commission, has announced his pledge to focus on strengthening competition within the telecommunications sector and to fight for consumers’ rights, despite his past as a lobbyist. Wheeler acknowledged his lobbyist history but vowed that his client will now be “the American public.” Wheeler made the remarks at a Senate Commerce Committee meeting for his nomination. While the committee will need to vote to approve Wheeler’s appointment, Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) expressed full confidence in a vote of approval. A date for that vote has not yet been set.
