US: Possible Ahold-Food Lion merger would create one of the largest grocers

Shares of Belgian supermarket operator Delhaize and its Dutch counterpart Ahold jumped on Wednesday, as reports suggested talks on a merger between the groups had advanced and a deal could be announced as early as this month.

    If the merger happens, it would create the fourth largest grocer in the United States, ranking behind Kroger with 8.3 percent market share and retail behemoth Wal-Mart, which had a 26 market share last year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

    The merger negotiations are moving along swiftly and a deal could be announced as early as this month, separate reports in Belgian business daily Bloomberg said.
