Telco product maker Qualcomm announced Friday with Hewlett-Packard that it reached a deal to acquire 2,400 patents from HP’s portfolio.
Qualcomm, which is currently under investigation in China for undisclosed competition concerns, boosted its patent portfolio with the patents related to BitFone, iPaq and Palm technologies, reports say, boosting Qualcomm’s mobile operating system IP ownership.
Reports say 1,400 of those patents are either held or pending in the US, while the remaining cover technology in other nations. The majority first came to HP though its merger with Palm in 2010.
That buyout, reports say, was part of an ultimately unsuccessful move by HP to expand into the mobile technology sector through patent grabs.
Qualcomm has not revealed the financial details of the patent buyout nor its plans for the property.
