US: Reports dash optimism of Comcast, TWC buyout

Despite earlier reports that cable giant Comcast may look to acquire Time Warner Cable, a senior official at the Federal Communications Commission has reportedly stated that the authority is unlikely to clear such a deal.

Rumors sparked discussion that Comcast could potentially partner with Charter Communications, the smaller rival which has also shown interest in TWC, to jointly buy the company.

But FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai told reporters that Comcast, as the number one cable provider, would not gain clearance to buy its closest rival; “The Obama administration has applied greater scrutiny to proposed mergers and acquisitions,” Pai told reporters late last week, citing AT&T’s failed buyout of T-Mobile as precedent.
