US: Sen. Klobuchar announces anti-phone lock bill advancement

Senator Amy Klobuchar announced Wednesday that a bill that would allow for phone unlocking has been approved by the Senate and will now head to the House of Representatives for a vote.

    The legislation is aimed at boosting wireless competition by allowing consumers to use their phone on any service provider, encouraging switching. The bill, named the “Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act,” follows Klobuchar’s campaign for the Federal Communications Commission to take action on the matter.

    The bill was introduced last year and directs the FCC to ensure consumers can unlock their phones and switch carriers should they desire to do so. The FCC reached an agreement with AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and Verizon that will facilitate the plans, reports say.

    Klobuchar is the chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights.
