US: Senators warn against T-Mobile, Sprint merger

 |  October 8, 2017

US Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, US Sen. Al Franken, and other Democrats urged the Trump administration to investigate the impact of a potential T-Mobile and Sprint merger.

A combination of T-Mobile and Sprint could raise significant antitrust issues and could harm consumers, according to a press release from Klobuchar’s office.

Although a deal has not been announced, the two parties have made repeated attempts to merge, and current reports suggest they are close to an agreement. In a letter, the senators call on Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai and Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, Makan Delrahim, to begin to examine this potential transaction now.

“Beginning an investigation into a merger of T-Mobile and Sprint now will allow your agencies to quickly, but fully, review the agreement if it is announced,” the senators wrote. “The likelihood of the transaction occurring combined with the serious issues that it raises provide compelling reason for DOJ and the FCC to begin investigating the potential transaction.”
