US: Staples explores asset sales ahead of Office Depot deal

According to the report, Staples is considering various divestiture scenarios as it works to close its merger deal with Office Depot. Staples will only proceed if it’s determined that asset sales will help the review process.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is examining on whether or not creation of a single national office supplies retailer will harm competition and raise prices to large corporate customers who purchase under contract.

The FTC hasn’t commented on the deal, but it could move forward without conditions, file a lawsuit seeking to block the merger, or reach a deal which could call for asset sales to another supplier or retailer.
