US: Surgical joint venture for $1.9bn may draw antitrust attention

 |  March 23, 2015

A joint venture between Tenet Healthcare and United Surgical Partners International will create the largest provider of ambulatory surgery service provider in the U.S.

The venture will also solidify its hold in the St. Louis area, where United Surgical already runs about a third of the free-standing outpatient surgical centers on the Missouri side of the region.

The huge deal may draw the attention of antitrust regulators, said Tim Greaney, expert on health care and antitrust law and co-director of the Center for Health Law Studies at St. Louis University.
