TGabriel Contreras, Chairman of Mexico’s Telecommunications regulator, declared this week that new efforts to regulate Uber would benefit free competition and improve services for consumers.
The app-based service “should adapt to a new reality, and must neither inhibit innovation nor create unfair advantages or market distortions…” The official further remarked on the efficiency these services have shown in solving problems within their sector.
In related remarks, PAN senator Marian Gómez del Campo argued that the services offered by Uber and its rivals effectively target a different market sector from traditional Taxis, and assured that their coexistence would surely benefit consumers.
Mexican authorities have recently cracked down on Uber and other ride-sharing services, as have others around the world, motivated by the risk these services pose to traditional Taxi operators, who have accused these companies of engaging in unfair competition. Mexico city’s government has recently proposed new rules and regulations to try and settle the matter.
