Peru: World Bank and ICN praise Peruvian antitrust efforts

The World Bank and the International Competition Network have issued statements recognizing the successful strategies implemented by Peru’s Commission for the Elimination of Bureaucratic Barriers (CEB), a part of competition and markets regulator INDECOPI. The measures implemented have resulted in the removal of 978 bureaucratic obstacles to competition at 45 public entities. These barriers affected efficiency in strategic sectors such as communications, construction and public services.

    The international institutions praised the Peruvian authorities for their impact on competition and competitiveness in important areas for national development, awarding it first prize in their ongoing annual ranking. The ranking seeks to highlight the Best Practices for promoting competition through non-coercive means.

    The CEB’s programme, developed by in-house specialists and presented before the WB and ICN in January, involves a series of coordination and prevention programmes for public entities that gives priority to the elimination of red tape above traditional sanctions and penalties.
