Broadcom CEO Aims To Persuade EU Over Their $61B VMware Deal

Broadcom’s CEO Hock Tan is scheduled to present arguments to EU antitrust regulators on Friday in support of his proposed $61 billion acquisition of cloud computing company VMware. The deal has garnered attention and scrutiny from both sides of the Atlantic, and Tan will aim to demonstrate that the acquisition is pro-competitive.

    Tan and his team, along with their lawyers, arrived in Brussels for a private hearing regarding a significant merger in the technology industry. Tan did not provide any statements as he entered the hearing.

    Tan is scheduled to present his arguments to senior officials from the European Commission, as well as representatives from national competition agencies and lawyers from the EU executive. The attendees will include the deputy director general for mergers, Guillaume Loriot.

    VMware President Sumit Dhawan will participate in the hearing remotely, and there are no other third-party attendees, reported Reuters. 

    Broadcom requested a hearing following a warning from the Commission that the deal may limit competition in the market for hardware components that interoperate with VMware’s software.
