Italian Operators EU Fine Payment Extended Due To COVID-19

Italy’s antitrust and competition authority AGCM has extended to October 1 the deadline by which the operators Telecom Italia (TIM), Wind Tre, Vodafone Italia, and Fastweb need to pay a fine for their 28-day billing practices. The four operators were fined a total of €228 million (US$247.25 million) earlier this year after the watchdog accused them of infringing competition rules by collectively agreeing to raise their prices after introducing 28-day billing in 2017.

    However, in line with the provisions of the “Cura Italia” legislative decree issued on March 17, 2020, on account of the coronavirus emergency, the regulator has decided to extend the deadline for the payment of the fines from May 15 to October 1. Following the antitrust probe, AGCM fined TIM a total of over €114 million (US$123.6 million), Vodafone nearly €60 million (US$65.06 million), Wind Tre almost €39 million (US$42.3 million), and Fastweb over €14 million (US$15.18 million).
