Mexico: New rules for airport slots released

Mexico’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation has published a Reform to Regulation of Airports Law, setting it in line with some of the corrective measures that the Federal Commission of Economic Competition (Cofece) recently requested in order to remedy the over-saturation at Mexico City International Airport.

    Slots will now be assigned in series, considering, among other aspects, the current level of use by the airlines and their historical priority over them. A carrier will have priority over others when it has operated a series of schedules for 85% of the time, and in more than 15% of those slots has not had delays of plus or minus 15 minutes.

    The reform establishes a reserve fund that will integrate the new schedules, the returned slots, those that lost their historical priority and those that are available for any other cause. The schedules will be assigned giving at least 50% priority to new incoming air carriers.
