Spain: Government proposes new councillors for CNMC

Spain’s Council of Ministers has approved an agreement proposing to Congress the appointment of Xabier Ormaetxea and Bernardo Lorenzo as new Councillors at the CNMC. Both men were part of the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT) before the government decided to eliminate the old regulator agencies in 2013, leaving the CNMC as a ‘super-regulator’.

    Lorenzo and Ormaetxea had presented appeals before the country’s Supreme Court over the unduly early termination of their mandates, appeals which they won after the High Court sought an opinion from the European Court of Justice.

    Last June, two other appointments were made: Mariano Bacigalupo, proposed by the PSOE and Pilar Canedo, representing Ciudadanos (replacing Eduardo Matilla and Diego Rodríguez respectively), as well as the renewal of Maria Ortiz’s position, representing the leading Partido Popular (PP). With these changes, Podemos, the third largest political party in Congress, would be left out of a controversial agency.
