Italy: Antitrust regulator probes WhatsApp messaging app

Italy’s antitrust watchdog said on Friday that it had opened a probe into whether or not messaging provider WhatsApp obligated users to agree to share personal information and whether that imposed “unfair” conditions on users.

    WhatsApp stated in August that it might start sharing phone numbers with the social network giant Facebook, prompting EU regulators to look into the matter.

    The Italian regulators are looking into whether or not the WhatsApp application made it so they users had to agree to share information to continue to use the app.

    A spokeswoman for WhatsApp said the company was cooperating fully with the investigation.
