Colombia: ‘Competition rules must be changed’ – Superintendent

Pablo Felipe Robledo, Colombia’s Superintendent for Industry and Commerce, spoke at length about the need to approve a set of changes to the country’s competition regulation framework during the 14th Financial Law Conference organized by Asobancaria in the city of Cartagena.

    The official, head of Colombia’s competition regulation, highlighted the initiative’s importance for the country’s economy, as it would reduce the ability of some companies to engage in anti-competitive schemes that hurt the public.

    Robledo del Castillo went on to say that a more competitive atmosphere in Colombia’s private sector would bring bigger and better players to the market, as well as improvements in quality and service. On the other hand, he replied to critics of the harsher laws by replying that the toughest sanctions would not necessarily be applied without considering the severity of the violation and the importance of the affected market.
