Peru: Protection tariffs “mortally wounded”

Speaking before reporters, Peru’s Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation, Juan Manuel Benites, maintained that protection tariffs or ‘price bands’, such as those awarded to Peruvian farmers, are “mortally wounded” around the world.

    The Minister highlighted that greater growth in the agriculture sector in the future would not be achieved through tariffs and restrictions, but through making it more competitive.

    To do this, the Agriculture official pointed to the government’s focus on road-building, agriculture financing programs and genetic research, among others.
