US: States join dollar store merger dispute

A group of state attorneys general have reportedly joined federal investigators in scrutinizing the fight between two rival dollar stores to acquire Family Dollar, say reports.

    Twenty states have now joined the federal probe of Dollar General and Dollar Tree’s fight to acquire Family Dollar in efforts to determine how consolidation of the industry would potentially impact prices. Dollar Tree has already secured a deal to acquire Family Dollar, but Dollar General disrupted the plans with a hostile acquisition move with a $9.1 billion offer.

    Experts say the states’ involvement in the Federal Trade Commission’s probe will offer valuable insight into how the dollar chains operate and compete in the states. Family Dollar had previously disclosed that states had become involved in the investigation, but recent developments confirmed the news. Florida, Vermont and Indiana are all included in the case.
