UK: Ofcom appoints new chief executive

The board of communications regulator Ofcom has announced the appointment of its new chief executive, to replace current leader Ed Richards.

    Richards, who will step down at the end of this year, is set to be succeeded by Sharon White, currently a senior Treasury official, say reports. White’s appointment has already been approved by secretary of state for culture, media and sport Sajid Javid.

    Ofcom director of strategy, international, technology and economist group Steve Unger will reportedly serve as interim chief executive during the three-month span between Richards’ departure and White’s taking office.

    White became the first woman to be appointed a permanent Treasury secretary, report say. She will take up the post as several high-profile cases regarding the competition between commercial broadcasters are ongoing.
