US: DOJ allows Orbital, Alliant space technology merger

The US Department of Justice unconditionally approved of the proposed merger between space and satellite technology companies Orbital Sciences and Alliant Techsystems, according to reports.

    The deal will combine ATK’s aerospace and defense operations with Orbital; the DOJ found that the merger would not lead to adverse effects on competition.

    The merger was also examined by the Department of Defense, then provide its recommendation on the deal to the DOJ. Experts said the Pentagon would likely focus on how the merged entity would lead the space technology industry.

    But with the DOJ’s clearance, industry experts now say the deal will likely close by its February deadline. The companies’ shareholders must now approve the deal, according to reports.
