US: San Jose MLB antitrust spat hits key stage

The antitrust dispute over whether the California Oakland A’s baseball team can move its stadium from San Jose to the South Bay is about to hit a key stage, say reports.

    On Tuesday, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments in the case that challenges Major League Baseball’s antitrust exemption, which ahs been in place for nearly a century.

    The dispute began when the San Francisco Giants blocked the A’s move, arguing that the Giants own territorial rights to South Bay. The geographical monopoly is allowed under MLB’s antitrust exemption.

    San Jose is now challenging the MLB to allow the move, though some experts predict that the fight will be futile.

    Still, some experts say, a ruling against the MLB will likely land in a settlement that favors the A’s relocation.
