Austria: Market awaits benefits of last year’s wireless takeover

Austria is awaiting the expected benefits of last year’s acquisition of Orange Austria and regulators are keeping an eye out for signs of hurt competition, though the government is expecting new competition to soon enter the wireless market, reports say.

    Hutchison Whampoa acquired Orange Austria in early 2013 on the grounds that it would open its network to mobile virtual network operators. The real reduced the number of competitors from four to three.

    Now, the nation’s telecommunications regulator is expecting new operators to enter the industry in this year’s fourth quarter following Hutchison’s takeover, an expectation authorities hope will ease recent rate hikes imposed on wireless customers in recent weeks.
