France: Orange takes on Spanish rival with new complaint

French telco operator Orange has reportedly filed an antitrust complaint against its Spanish rival Telefonica and what it calls an anticompetitive offer that competitors cannot replicate themselves.

    According to reports, Orange claims Telefonica’s latest deal that allows a free upgrade for customers to a fiber optic Internet package that includes TV content cannot be offered by competitors without financial losses.

    Telefonica is currently bound by rules that require any of its offer to be able to be replicated by rivals if they involve deals with certain Internet connections. The Spanish conglomerate was once a monopoly. It now rents its network infrastructure to competitors.

    According to reports, Orange also filed a complaint with authorities that argues Telefonica’s proposed acquisition of Digital+ would give the company too much pay-TV market share.
