US: FCC agenda to tackle spectrum allocation, ownership rules

The Federal Communications Commission’s next meeting is set for March 31 and, according to reports, the agenda will focus on rule changes for media ownership, as well as increasing spectrum allocation.

    Among one of the more controversial topics the FCC plans to address is the issue of joint sales agreements between television stations; the communications watchdog announced only days ago that it will crackdown on the practice that allows TV broadcasting stations to control more than just their own market by pooling advertising with each other.

    Reports say the measure to curb this practice is expected to pass.

    Additionally, the FCC is expected to release 100 megahertz of new spectrum to Wi-Fi use as cable giants, including Comcast and Time Warner Cable, continue to boost their Wi-Fi hotspot services throughout the country to compete with the likes of Verizon and AT&T.
