Canada’s Industry Minister James Moore told reporters that the nation is open to possibly lifting restrictions on foreign acquisitions of domestic telcos, a move that could help government efforts to boost wireless competition.
According to Moore, government regulators are aware that proponents of such a measure are calling upon the lifted restrictions. The move would follow last year’s relaxed regulations, when officials allowed foreign buyouts of telcos with less than 10 percent market share.
As the government looks to more ways to boost competition, officials have also established spectrum buyout caps for dominant players including BCE and Rogers Communications. The nation is planning a spectrum auction next month.
