Hong Kong: New competition authority faces unique obstacles

Hong Kong has officially established a new regime of competition policy, and the city is now taking the next steps of establishing a Competition Commission. According to reports, the new regulator’s guidelines are now in the drafting process.

    To be headed by Anna Wu, the new Competition Commission is facing challenges as an export-import oriented market in the globe. According to Wu, that status means Hong Kong is particularly vulnerable to cartel abuse outside the new regulator’s jurisdiction.

    On the domestic front, reports say Hong Kong’s new competition regulator will need to work with industry heads to establish their own guidelines for local competition.

    As it faces these obstacles, Wu said the first goal for the new regime is to establish the thresholds at which market dominance is defined.
